The M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) is a light machine gun and American variation of the FN Minimi light machine gun. The army found itself seeking a better weapon that was lighter than the M-60, yet with more firepower than the M-16. Since the Browning Automatic Rifle was phased out of production, such a weapon didn't come about until the 1980s. Since then, the SAW has become a weapon used by most troops on the modern battlefield, despite it's flaws.
